The strategy of the Greater Jurong Lake District Masterplan is to develop a new, innovative, vibrant and resilient second central business district for the future economy of Singapore. Adopting Landscape Urbanism principles as a design approach, the masterplan brings landscape in on an important dialogue with the architecture fabric. This Masterplan connects and revitalises existing water channels so that they serve as a grid of interconnected ‘stepping stone habitats’ and green corridors that promotes the movement of wildlife while also creating an inclusive recreational network for users. Positioned as a future model of sustainability, a car-lite philosophy was adopted and a Blue-Green network that includes an inner green belt composed of community farms, parks, cycling and pedestrian trails was also integrated in the planning. Wetlands, biotopes and urban swales in this green belt were also connected to enhance the social-recreational network. In the open international competition, this Masterplan design was one of five teams shortlisted.
